At least Harrison Ford understood the assignment: he grayed his hair for Indiana Jones, and this holds true for both Crystal Skull and Dial.

Then, there's James Bond. Connery didn't go gray for "Diamonds Are Forever" and instead had a bad wig and gained weight. Roger Moore went somewhat gray with blond and brown hair, and had an aged appearance, despite undergoing some plastic surgery. Timothy Dalton had two films and couldn't go gray. Brosnan went gray with his later films. Daniel Craig still went blonde up until Spectre and No Time to Die, where it's gray/blonde with a visibly aged appearance.
