Oh god, I keep forgetting parts of the question to answer. In regards to the examples, I'll say that the anime Ergo Proxy is one that comes to mind when thinking of characters who struggle against an inner alter ego that causes them to transform, and become horrifying both to themselves and others. Good drama!
