I had a THERAPIST give me a glowing recommendation of Twilight , she'd gush about how good it is , how the author is an English major (meh) and just the fact that she is not only recommending this book to a TEENAGER as a therapist, but the fact that I was an incredibly immature for my age autistic teenage, who was at the mental maturity of like.. 13 at 18-19 and is deeply depressed is... kinda alarming

She also turned out to be incredibly toxic and manipulative, trying to catch me in lies by asking things like "do you think you're trying hard enough?" (at what??) and later I found out she was trying to play me and my mom against each other by acting cold to her initially before calling her behind my back to apologize and say how I was manipulative ... well somehow it's not surprising

Any therapist who does not at least SEE some worrying signs of abuse on Edward's end or unhealthy devotion on Bella's is just.. not good at their job tbh. It's not like they're all very subtle about it...

TBH at that point not only was I not really interested in romance stories.. I also heard/looked up all the negative/critical stuff about it around this time . My sister was a big fan(but not a crazy fan... just liked the books).

So i really had no interest and I remember being surprised based on what I knew about it that a therapist was encouraging it.

and as I realized more about this therapist it was like "..ahh yeah that checks out" lol

I have no idea if it's appropriate for therapists' to recommend things.

Also, it sounds like you had a bad experience with this therapist just based on what you said and I'm sorry that happened to you!

Yup
Shes probably the most long term damaging therapists i had. But after her i learned not to stick around when i saw red flags. I had a therapist afterwards who i refused to see after she made a fucked up comment in a session when i was already near tears

"I had a THERAPIST give me a glowing recommendation of Twilight , she'd gush about how good it is"

and

"She also turned out to be incredibly toxic and manipulative"

LOL... yeah, I can see how those two things would go together.

yeah i know right.

In retrospect it def makes sense. Not everyone enters the profession with good intentions.

DA

Therapists are really supposed to give hope to their clients but this therapist sounds awful!

Yuuup

Oh and i was also pretty autistic. So yeah . Not the best grip on social norms/social graces.

Honestly I still resent that therapist for contributing to me and my mom being at odds and ruining the limited time i didn't realize i had left with mom. Also the fact the whole manipulative thing mentally fucked me up to this day.

Fuck that lady.

DA

OP, what was the goal in therapy, if I may ask?

I mean I'd been going to various therapists a lot over my childhood because I was often moody or depressed and struggled in school and I got bullied a lot . and occasionally me and my parents fought though more/the worst of that happened after the ending of school and after me seeing that particular therapist so.. *shrug*

But generally I got therapy along with my psychiatrists and the medications I would take for like depression and stuff.
