So to be clear, your issue is with ubiquity rather than taste.

...Since it's totally possible that ninety-whatever percent of fans write/read that because they enjoy it, rather than because they have some ingrained regressive patriarchal mindset.

I think we have reached full circlejerk here. I just think it's amazing that people can be completely in denial of the obvious stereotypes and how it can be a problem.

No denial here about stereotypes. I just don't understand the problem.

DA In practical terms, I think the problem is that when people go looking for stories with feminine men, that character's personality is often altered, in fandom, into a stereotypical willing submissive.

Even when the canon character's personality contradicts that, the assumption (that men who aren't actively performing masculinity, or don't have bodies that make other people believe they're manly, want to be fucked or are comfortable with it) wins out.

I don't think there should be any shame in having fun with a character who's shamelessly stereotypical. It's just frustrating when canon makes someone who goes against the stereotype and you love them and ... 99 stories out of 100 tagged with his name, in fandom, do not have that guy.

Especially so when that consistently happens to certain characters, based on their having this pattern in common.

Real talk, who cares? Real femme queer men who like to bottom are a thing, I've met loads in my lifetime, are they somehow setting every other gay man back by falling into a stereotype?

I don’t think anyone was talking about policing the actions of real people. This has all been about ubiquitous or predominant depictions in fiction.

Do you feel the same way about all stereotypes? Does the existence of some real world examples mean that there’s no harm in making that the standard version in stories?

idk, I feel like at some point when you have two aggressive butch guys you want to write fucking each other but can only do so if you reduce one butch guy into a weepy feminine mess? yeah there's an internalized something going on there. fic writers can make the choice to keep all the characters IC or to just write one of them as a cariacture of some bullshit that applies to neither character (hyper-aggressive angry top vs weepy wilting flower bottom), and if they make the latter choice they're pretty much a problem. and that goes for f/f as well as m/m.

I don't care if fandom decides one half always receives, they just gotta stop making the bottom cry, beg, say it hurts, need after-care, mince and fawn on their oh so big powerful angry top, etc. They don't even have to flip and be a bratty bottom, just fucking be the recognizable character!

I agree that IC shut is the most enjoyable to read. For me personally, anyway.

I 100% agree with this. I don't really give a fuck who is fucking and who is being fucked, just don't totally fuck *over* a character's character so they can fit into some weird 'bottom' or 'top' mold.

yes, the mold is just annoying
