I think it makes sense to not want to root for him from jump. For me, I recall wanting to like Walter and at times even wanting him to succeed early on, but there was always something detestable about him.

It wasn't until after season 4 did I see that Walter did not "turn (break) bad" but he was an asshole the whole time. The only reason he seemed sympathetic was because he was in a crappy situation (struggling with money with a disabled son and a baby on the way with a wife whose sister and brother-in-law seem better fortuned than him and he has cancer). But if you look at what he's like, he's a pretty selfish person and really does feel like he's better than other people. He just had to gain the confidence that he can do whatever he wants and get away with it to show his true colors.

It didn't surprise me that a large chunk of BB fans were supportive of Walter and never reflected upon what a terrible person he is.

I watched Breaking Bad after it ended, because by the time I started hearing about it, it was in season 2 or 3, and it seemed pointless to start at that point. AMC did a full series marathon of it leading up to New Years and I watched it then. When I was on the outside looking in on fandom, everyone seemed to hate Jesse and Skyler, and then I watched the show and they were pretty much my two favorite characters, then I realized it was just Walt supporters who were angry at both of them for 'betraying' Walt. Gee, I wonder why they would do such a thing.
