There's an interesting irony in the fact that the person who started the top thread wasn't even talking about the USA, as far as I can tell. Other people immediately made it about Nazis in the USA but it doesn't seem that was the intended topic.

I think the politics thread just won't exist from now on. The original idea was to contain political threads and that everyone who reads that thread goes in expecting to butt heads, but I don't think it's working. This doesn't mean political topics will be banned, but I think the thread existing has gone from having a place for political topics to go, to outright encouraging political wank every day, and it's not worth the trouble.

There are plenty of places elsewhere on the internet for people to discuss explicitly political topics if they want to, and I'd encourage them to go there instead.
