Inspired by #5 - reading

What're you reading? Longfic? Flashfic? Books?

I am struggling through the book Finding Flora for a bookclub I'm in. I'm about halfway through and it has taken over a week to get that far (usually I finish a book the same length in a couple of days). It is so slow with enough peaks of interest to keep me going but if it weren't for a bookclub I probably would have given up on it by now.

I finally have a copy of the Complete Sherlock Holmes, working my way through the "novels" I never read before. idk what I'm gonna do when I finish that, I have nothing else new-to-me.

I am struggling to find a book to read. I usually read two at once.

Reading the Blackwater Saga with my reddit co-mod.

Tried reading 'Incidents Around the House' and 'Wake Up and Open Your Eyes' but they were both so depressing. Now trying 'When The Wolf Comes Home'.

Foe fanfic, still working my way through the whole Logan/Wade tag. Poolverine has me in a death grip. This series in particular has been fantastic. https://archiveofourown.org/series/4288789

I think Spiderman is forever a bumbling teenager to me, so shipping him with adults just always weirds me out. But I have heard the pairing has some great fic.

I'm just not a huge fan of Spiderman. I don't hate him or anything. Just very meh on him. I guess I'm mostly familiar with the "older" movie ones since I've yet to see the Holland movies.

I’m reading The Martian a bit slowly, but really enjoying it.

The sense of humour is really great, pulls me along without making it feel too quippy or out of touch

Just finished The Steppenwolf (the "The" is part of the title-- it's the 2023 translation by Kurt Beals).

Handful of things:

Zer0es by Chuck Wendig: modern hacker spy thriller. Billed as "Person of Interest meets Leverage" and that's just straight catnip for me. I'm enjoying it!
Winter of Ice and Iron by Rachel Neumeier: standalone fantasy novel. Wasn't into the first few chapters or the worldbuilding style, but the plot really started kicking up and I like one of the characters a lot more now.
Yuru Camp: seinen manga about highschool girls who like to go camping. On Vol. 13 now, easily one of my favorite manga of all time. Gorgeous art and lovely stories. It's inspired me to get outside more, too.

These days mostly PWPs, so short. Sometimes I'm in the mood and find a longfic that really interests me. But mostly short stuff, at most 4-5 chapters.

War Before Civilization, by Lawrence H. Keeley. Comprehensive study of the human race's, or I should say the male human's, proclivity for starting, continuing, and suffering from war. It's surprisingly readable while being very depressing. Honestly I think there's no hope; though I've finally realised why sport is such a good thing.
