When did Pepsi get popular?

[personal profile] philstar22 2025-07-22 03:31 am (UTC)(link)
When did Pepsi become so common in restaurants? I'm used to most things being Coke. But first in Oklahoma, and now Seattle, Pepsi seems more common than Coke products. I just want my diet coke.

Pepsi is the woke cola, of course everywhere is going to serve it.

It could be a contract/money thing. It can be that Pepsi is offering a cheaper deal to many places that used to have exclusive contracts with Coke as the soda vendor. If not cheaper, maybe a better deal in one way or another (better delivery times, more choices in drinks flavors).

I personally prefer the taste of Coke but soda is soda. I wouldn't mind if a place served Pepsi instead of Coke.

I'm the opposite and prefer Diet Pepsi.

Diet Coke tastes like a carbonated burp.

Diet Coke tastes like chemicals.

It varies by area. I was in my 30s before I lived someplace where most restaurants had Coke instead of Pepsi. There is also the issue of chain restaurants being owned by one or the other or having a nationwide exclusive contract regardless of local suppliers.

It has always seemed like a 50/50 thing about which brand you'll get at a restaurant. Sorry you are striking out.

I mean, Pepsi is very common in European restaurants I found on my travels. Also Coke is funding Israel so maybe people are trying to move away from it.

The 1980s?

As a Pepsi preferrer I don't know that I've noticed all that many places near me making the switch, it seems about dead even. But I'm trying to reduce caffeine and caffeine-free is impossible to get hold of in my neck of the woods, so...
