From my POV, it's a part of the culture to hide racist aspects of most wealthy white people's public facing interactions and pretend that they aren't racist. I think another good example of this is in "Succession" when Greg hesitates to work for ATF (the show's version of Fox News) and says he doesn't support racism and Tom laughs it off. Says everyone is against racism and that working for ATF isn't about racism.

Chris Evans' character spent the majority of the movie being really open about how "above it all" he is compared to his family. A part of the reveal/mask off is to show his true character, and that includes his racism.

That’s a good point. I hadn’t thought about his character in quite those terms before.
