Even the most WASPy motherfucker in the world can always convert.

Aside from its more liberal trappings, I'm not a fan of Reform Judaism simply because, from my understanding, it was less an attempt to "modernize" Judaism than it was to allow greater ease of assimilation (LOLZ JUDAISM IS JUST ANOTHER CHURCH YOU GUYZ). It's also not ritualistic enough for me. Based on the Reform synagogues I've been to, anyway.

Reconstructionist Judaism (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reconstructionist_Judaism) is more my thing, anyway.

Me too. I don't even believe in God, so it's all about ritual and tradition for me. But damn, I've been met with some sanctimonious bullshit, especially from the Orthodox. Do you know that I've actually been called a heretic to my face? Seriously-- they're stuck in the fucking Bronze Age.

Some Orthodox Jews can be assholes. At the same time, the only synagogue that I ever felt comfortable in and welcome in was an Orthodox one. I didn't have anyone questioning whether or not I was really Jewish, and after awhile even the Lubavitcher rabbi was cool with me. And I don't even really know if I'm Jewish or not (I'm assuming I am since my mom always tries to change the subject when I bring it up, and she wouldn't let me come with her when she went out to Texas to bury my grandmother).

I can't stand Orthodox synagogues because I love to sing out really loud. Since the Orthodox prohibit female singing in public, I feel oppressed, which makes me angry, which makes me no longer enjoy the service. That, and most of the Orthodox synagogues I've been to put the women on a second floor where it's basically impossible to follow along with the service. Pisses me off.

Hrm, well you have a point there. I'm pretty much a wallflower/bookworm type so it doesn't really bother me, also I don't know how to chant or sing in Hebrew (I can't even remember how to say the shema anymore). I actually liked being separated from the men because that meant I got a better vantage point and I was more likely to be alone -- in this particular synagogue the women's sections were on either side and elevated, so you could see over everybody else. Though it was annoying when I'd go with my friend for morning prayers and I had to sit behind that curtain thing.

But all of the men were very nice to me, nobody treated me as if I were inferior, and actually the men were more friendly and eager to talk to me than the women were (all of the women tended to be kind of snooty towards me). I do understand that it's not for everyone and there are a lot of problems with the Orthodox movement. My husband doesn't go to synagogue because aside from not being very religious (though we're both deists), he's Sephardic and doesn't really like the way European Jews do things.
