believe your fan elders when they say no, self-insert fic did not start with anime. it's far, far older than you know.

My first fanfic, as a 90s child, before I ever had access to the internet or really anything outside of books and Saturday morning cartoons, was a self-insert of me getting to hang out with the Animorphs, because I thought they were super cool and I wanted to be their friend.

It most certainly did not originate with anime.

ahh, those first childhood fics are a trip, aren't they? I think mine was either Jem & the Holograms or Thundercats in the 80s. So many cool gangs to hang with in the fic world!

I never wrote it down, but I definitely fantasized about being an Animorph. Not only about being able to turn into animals and fighting Yeerks, but I also had fantasies about having to go to school with an alien in human morph (like Jake taking Ax to school) and having to explain all the weird school and social things to them. I think I liked the idea of having a companion who would find it all as weird as I did.

Mine was a self insert of writing a long lost sister of my favorite character. And of course the sister had a tragic past and was super special and everything.

It also predates Reader fic, which I don't recall even existing until a few years ago - certainly not on the scale it exists now.
