I’ve seen it used for what I think should be called “reader insert” stories. Either of the “Y/N” type (where the character is literally supposed to be given the reader’s name) or of the “blank canvas” type (where they’re just quite bland and designed for projecting onto).

Above, OP explained that their fandoms also use “SI” to mean one character being reincarnated into another.

This is wild. I have never encountered such a thing. Kids these days on a whole other level.

I'm reasonably sure that - y'know the classic flavor of story self-insert characters go through? I'm reasonably sure that's become a genre, which is still called "self-insert" even when the character being inserted isn't the author's self.

It usually is the author's self, or Y/N, or something else of that nature; but there doesn't seem to be terminology for the rare occasions it's not.
