Anachronistic names. No, your character from 13th century Ireland would not be named Shaylee Brianna. Nor would someone in the Victorian era be named Brayden.

There's a variation I'll tolerate, but still notice- when an author uses names that are historically accurate, but chooses ones that are currently popular or 'timeless' for the good characters, and ones that have fallen out of use for the bad characters. So the book is set in the 19th century and the main character is Ava or Sophia, her love interest is Hunter or Jackson (people did use surnames as given names if they were family names, or honoring someone), her friends are Mary, Jack, Will, and Elizabeth, and the bad guys are Gertrude and Bertha and Hubert.

That's lazy research right there. If an author can't even get the names right, I have little confidence that they'll get any other historical details or the dialogue right, either.

Yeah, Brianna didn't turn up until the 16th century!
