Curious, is there any chance your SiL actually feels a bit sadder because they weren't closer (and wishes they had been)? Or do you have it on good authority that it's more like a distant cousin died?

I talked to them a couple days ago and they seemed okay. Like they were sad, but also kind of pragmatic about it. According to SiL they were never close and went many years with no contact before reconnecting as adults, amd even then it was a bit if a frought relationship. They loved each other, but also had a distance between them.
