I love how this thread is like, "names should be historically accurate" but is also like, "I do not want to see popular contemporary names in my contemporary fiction."

There are popular contemporary names that aren't Schmayden nonsense. You could name your child character Aidan, Jack, Jacob, Noah, Ava, Isabella, Madeleine, or Sophia if you want a popular name.

And for adult characters, you can pick a name that was popular the year/decade they were born unless you want them to have an unusual name. So Aidan and Sophia's parents can be Matthew and Jessica, for example.

And yeah, the nonsense isn't anachronistic in a contemporary novel, but it does hurt my eyes and it's distracting.
