It's part self-loathing, and part that, sad to say, a lot of women genuinely dislike other women. They, and maybe a couple close friends, are fine...but all other women are not.

I'm not sure I believe that, but that's possibly because it'd be terribly depressing if it were true. I think that it's complicated. A patriarchal society means there are fewer resources for women, and it encourages toxic competition, IMO. When people feel insecure and inadequate, that can come out in hateful ways - this is true of both men and women. But for women, it can manifest in this weirdly poisonous, cutthroat pick-me competition where they lift themselves up by putting other women down. Sort of the crabs-in-a-bucket mentality.

I also think women grow up hearing that feminine things are lesser, weaker, not as good, etc. while simultaneously expected to be good at feminine things. It's a major mindfuck. Like, you're supposed to look made up, well dressed and pretty at all times, but society will also hammer you down if you seem to care TOO much about make-up, clothes, and looking pretty.
