Societies aren't the same societies everywhere though. Even in real world Earth history there were time periods where public shame worked. There are other times when it doesn't, and this is one of them.

Unless you're denying there were real world societies and time periods when public shame wasn't a great motivator? Hopefully not, I'm not sure how to continue a discussion with someone taking that stance.

In societies where shame worked, it was inversely proportional to how much power, money, and influence you had in that society. Poor people in those societies, just like today, were much more susceptible to shame than those in power. Just because one person in power in one society caved doesn't mean that society somehow was better about holding those in power to account. We very rarely do, in any society, because human psychology is universal.

I mean. OP's claim is that it doesn't work and that's not how humans work. A point was raised that no, it does work sometimes, just not now. Look at Watergate as a very famous example from less than 100 years ago. And now instead of simply admitting yeah it does work sometimes and it's not entirely restricted to fiction, you're moving goalposts...

No, I'm not. I'm saying that the one example you point to is an outlier. That's like saying that because one flight attendant survived a 30k foot fall from a plane when it explosively decompressed means that it's totally believable as a trope in 90% of novels. One real world example out of billions of it not happening does not mean it's a realistic trope.

Yeah, being like ~humans are humans~ doesn't negate actual history where humans provably did care, and acting like those didn't happen is being willfully blind to how humans actually operate. Being human means we're impacted greatly by the norms of our societies and we're capable of a variety of reactions to things.
