Ooh, yeah, felt that. I feel like the hardest pushback would probably not come from queer folks (the party line is basically "twinks and dykes fucked nasty at Stonewall" now), but from the cishet women who unabashedly kink on oppositional-hierarchical-sexism and get affronted when something doesn't conform to it. For every cishet dude who hates when the female LI talks to any male character who isn't the main, there is a girl out there who gets heated as hell if the male LI is not bighuge burlymasc and the girl is not his daintyfemme helpmeet.

I just want more variety. And more submissive men in general. And how about changing up the dynamics once in a while? The buff men being softer, more submissive. The smaller men being super dominant. Just play with things.

I feel like a fair amount of media aimed at women have that kind of love interest. To a degree. I wouldn't mind him being even softer, though. And the woman being harder while we're at it.

Of course, more things with gay couples of all types would also probably lessen the protests that any man like that can't have a female love interest and MUST be gay, because what protests there are really just seem like straw-grasps to complain about a lack of gay representation at all (and it is a very legit complaint).

I get this. I want to consume romances but too often the really popular books other women rec me have male leads that aren't my type. Sometimes I look past the things I don't like, but if it's the fifth time I have a small mousey female lead being pursued by a massive hunk with chest hair and low growly voice, I'm checked out and need a break.

I'm with you. This preference probably comes through in my own fic, too, in tending to emphasize the "pretty" features of a character who may not usually be thought of that way.

Nah sorry. I think you're wrong OP. I'm body hair neutral when it comes to sex. It's actually more realistic for someone in like an apocalypse setting to not shave and it's nice when art directors pay attention to that.

Or maybe there's a lot of women out there who would take the time to razor themselves while zombies are chasing them. Idk. Wouldn't be my highest priority.

Depends, is the point they're making that:

"men can realistically look like they haven't seen a razor in months while trudging around camping in mud and dirt for weeks while women are always somehow hairless and have perfect '''natural''' makeup no matter the circumstances" - this is pointing out an unreasonable situation

or "we want hairy women!! but who cares if the men look waxy sleek like they walked out of an underwear ad. this is fine" - this is all about hairy women and damn the realism

I have personally seen the former argument a lot and never seen the latter.

I really don't find body hair attractive, but I still think it's stupid when a female character who is supposedly an incredibly tough, unfeminine, practical, battle-hardened infantry soldier regularly wears a sleeveless top and shows off perfectly-shaven armpits.

That first thing, oof yeah. Fuck tumblr and that whole fandom mindset.

I stopped engaging with ST fandom when everyone started frothing at the mouth over Hopper's season 3 characterization and the aggro sexual tension between him and Joyce (which I enjoyed). But I also didn't watch past season 3 because it was so perfect to me the way it ended.
