I agree but just want to clear up - the trend is not shaving eyebrows, it's bleaching them.

Now I wonder why method one is preferable to the other if the results are essentially the same.

Maybe eyebrow stubble is particularly bad?

Hey I can answer this! I've had trichotillomania since I was like 6 and it's mostly focused on my eyebrows lol. Of course I pluck but back when I actually had some eyebrows I shaved to make things even.

Basically for darker haired persons the root of the eyebrow hair that is still in the skin can make the skin look darker. Think five-o-clock shadow. It's especially notable on lighter skinned persons, so Jenna would be a good example of someone who would want to bleach instead of shave.

Eyebrows also grow VERY quickly, so it's a lot of maintenance and if you leave it a day, it's ugly as sin.

Does bleach affect the hair root under the skin?

I've never tried bleaching myself, but I'm assuming it gets closer to the root so it has better results. I haven't known anyone who's done bleaching over filling in or microblading so I'm not so versed on it, but I would think it requires more maintenance and probably more damaging over time (probably who I don't know anyone in my tricho circles who do it?).

DA - haven't bleached my eyebrows, but have bleached other things and in addition to getting close to the root, the bleached hair covers the skin so you can't see the dark root just under it.

Honestly, I don't mind. It does kind of normalize the lack of brows outside of medical reasons. I usually draw mine in fully since I have absolutely 0% brows at this point in my life, but sometimes I'm too lazy when I go out. So it's nice that's it's not super unheard of to not have brows for aesthetic reasons. Even if the vast majority of people think the aesthetic is shit, lol.

Whoopi Goldberg has no eyebrows, and people are just so used to her face that it's not even noticeable anymore.

My dad's side of my family basically have little to no eyebrows, so I'm used to the look to some extent. I do feel there's a huge difference between naturally little to no hair, and then purposefully shaving/bleaching though. I think mostly because there's a purposeful contrast in where they'll dye their hair as dark as possible, or even to the facial expressions (like the one shown) where they're obviously used to a stronger brow so it looks more 'off' when it's done intentionally.

There is a trend to shave eyebrows. It's not as popular as bleaching, but it does exist.

To answer why bleaching is preferred, it's because eyebrows are very fickle things. They don't grow back the same way as head or other body hair often does. Especially when people pluck to extend the look. Some bits just don't want to grow back properly for whatever reason. Dying means you're preserving your eyebrows shape, and bleaching isn't any different really from when people use hair dye on their brows when changing their hair colour. It's just not recommended because the fumes are like supe bad for your eyes.
