Word so hard. I hate when I get no comments on a fic, and then see someone rec it or talk about it.

It takes TEN SECONDS TO WRITE A REVIEW, people. If you read the fic, leave a comment. I do.

(I write porn too, whee!)

(Anonymous) 2009-10-29 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)

LOL -- This is no comment on you (since I have no idea who you are) but three of my fics got faved on ff.net this week. I always look at the profiles of people who fave my stuff: All three had some variant of that same message in their profile, not a single one left a comment!

It takes TEN SECONDS TO WRITE A REVIEW

for you. not for everyone.

(Anonymous) 2009-10-29 10:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Considering the coherency level of this secret, people are probably holding off on correcting your... everything.

(Anonymous) 2009-10-29 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Sadly, I must say I agree. The wording and phrasing on this secret made it a bit difficult to get through. Sometimes people just want porn. But it is weird that people would rec you if they didn't leave a comment. I personally will not leave a comment if I didn't like the fic; however, if I thought it had hidden potential, I'll leave concrit. Not leaving a comment is my way of being nice. After all, all moms say that if you can't say something nice...

(Anonymous) 2009-10-30 03:47 am (UTC)(link)
I thought it was just me not understanding. Looks like I I wasn't the only one.

(Anonymous) 2009-10-29 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I usually leave a little note at the top of the fic, saying how much it would mean if people left a review. If the readers know you crave concrit or basic feedback, at least a few of them will give you some.

(Anonymous) 2009-10-29 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Yesssssssssssssss.

I saw someone rec a massively long fic I'm currently working on - not even porn, although there is some porn in it, by the way - and it made me very happy for about ten minutes, before it suddenly occurred to me to wonder why the hell you would rec something you have never commented on.

When there have been more than ten instalments.

I mean - what? COMMENT. PLEASE. Note I do not say 'review'. How long does it take you to type 'I liked this'? Those comments make me happy too. :D

(Anonymous) 2009-10-29 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)

But does it say so in your journal? Some authors can't stand the "I liked it!" comments, there were quite a few secrets about it in the past.

(Anonymous) 2009-10-29 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
It happens to me too. My real-life-ish journal is friends-only and people ask to friend me all the time claiming they're fans of my fic, yet I've never heard of them because they've never left a comment.

There's just too much stuff here to really unpack what's up, though. I would like to say though that "review" is sort of a misnomer for what writers are typically looking for. A review implies some sort of long, thoughtful evaluation of the fic, with quotes and whatnot. Which is great if you have the time and inclination to leave one! But mostly I think people are just wanting to get some comments so they have some sort of idea of how many people read it and what a general vague consensus was.

It kind of makes me wish that LJ just had some sort of "I like this!"/"I don't like this!" button.

Sometimes I leave comment for a fic because I loved it. Sometimes I just like it and I try to always leave a comment then, too, but when so many comments are gushing, my sincere "I read and enjoyed this" seems almost like damning with faint praise. Still, I never mind getting those comments, I don't even mind one word comments. Just a note to say I was here, I read and enjoyed. But even so I try to be good and leave a comment, but if all the other comments above where mine would be are all gush gush gush, then I feel awkward about just leaving a comment that says "liked this." And then if there are massive grammar or spelling or factual errors, I feel weird about not pointing it out. Clearly though I need to get over that.

(Anonymous) 2009-10-29 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
I comment on every fic I read that I like--which I seem to always find something to like unless it is extremely out there.

The secret was kind of hard to understand, though...

(Anonymous) 2009-10-29 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
You know, readers don't owe writers anything. Sure, it's great when someone leaves a comment, even if it's just one line, but they aren't obligated to.

However, if the rest of your writing is as hard to understand as your secret, that might just explain the lack of reviews.

(Anonymous) 2009-10-30 10:04 am (UTC)(link)
WORD. I don't get why people aren't just happy to find out they're recced or liked by even more people than those who left them reviews. That's my reaction when I find out.

[identity profile] jlh.livejournal.com 2009-10-29 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
First, yeah, your secret was really hard to understand.

I always find it a little weird when I realize someone has rec'd my fic without leaving a review. I never do that. The reason I'm a bit behind in making a rec post for some stuff I've read is that I haven't had the chance to leave the kind of comment for it that I want to.

I don't think everyone who likes my stuff has to leave a comment, but if you like it enough to rec it on your LJ I think it's cool to let the writer know, even if you don't want to leave some long comment. It's such good news, and really boosts you up!

(Anonymous) 2009-10-30 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
Try posting your fic on an Engrish site. I'll bet you'd get lots of comments then.

[identity profile] sanguinaryakiko.livejournal.com 2009-10-30 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
Harsh, but it made me laugh. A+, Anon.

Pretty sure it's whiney, not whinny

(Anonymous) 2009-10-30 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
I don't even understand what you're whining about. I had to read the comments to understand what you were whining about. Anyway, porn probably isn't something that a lot of people are going to leave written evidence that they 1) read it and 2) loved it. You can think about it this way: maybe they were all so drunk and fuzzyheaded on their afterglow that they couldn't manage a coherent comment.

So yeah, work on your comprehension, yo.

Re: Pretty sure it's whiney, not whinny

[identity profile] phaetonschariot.livejournal.com 2009-10-30 05:55 am (UTC)(link)
lol I always giggle a little when people leave comments on smut saying they got off on it. I take it as a compliment!

(Anonymous) 2009-10-30 02:32 am (UTC)(link)
Whinny anon is also a horse, apparently? Huh.

Seriously, I hope you have a beta for your fic, because if it's as incoherent, badly spelled, and grammatically incorrect as your secret, it's no wonder you're not getting comments. Nothing puts me off of reading even the most casual of smutfics like a bad grasp of the technical aspects of writing--I can even wade through the purplest of purple prose if it's at least spelled and punctuated correctly.

Nothing to see here, move along, move along...

[identity profile] mythc-writer.livejournal.com 2009-10-30 04:40 am (UTC)(link)
I really don't get what the problem is and I see I'm not the only one. Are you sad you're gaining popularity? Cause I really don't see the problem. :/

[identity profile] phaetonschariot.livejournal.com 2009-10-30 05:57 am (UTC)(link)
Personally, no matter how many comments I get I'm still taken aback when people recognise my name and treat me like I'm one of Those People. I've had people message me after I took prompts they'd submitted to communities going "I'm so glad you took that, I love your work!" and I never know quite what to say because I never see what I write as anything special.

WHINNY!!!

*gallops away*

[identity profile] karaokegal.livejournal.com 2009-10-30 07:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Lack of comments hurts like hell, but please do NOT take it to reflect in any way on the fic itself. (Although I hope the whinny/whiney thing is not indicative or your work in general.) There's a lot of fannish cliquishness involved as well as whether or not you write the "popular" pairing in a specific fandom.

Also, do you generally leave comments for other writers? It does make a difference.
