It's not the problematic nature that I object to with some cdramas, it's that a lot of these elements are often badly done, boring, or just plain ANNOYING. I enjoyed Story of Yanxi Palace and Empresses in the Palace, both of which have a lot of what you describe re: retribution themes, obsession, killing people, etc. But a lot of the idol dramas don't cast actors who can carry it off well, IMO, or the script isn't up to it.

Can't agree with you re: weak female leads, though. But they're a dime a dozen, so there's no shortage for your media consumption.

Yanxi Palace is so ugly, the costumes, and the tone is so joyless. At least idol dramas are fun.

Really? I was under the impression that the costumes were supposed to be closer to the time period and thought they were cool. The elaborate hair ornaments were neat.

I do like idol dramas, and they can be fun and prettier to look at. But they don't really do those elements with the same quality level, IMO.
