Brainstorming

(Anonymous) 2025-09-02 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
I'd like to brainstorm some ideas with people but I'm weirded out about doing it in a public group like reddit because what if someone takes my ideas and runs with them? Does anyone know of a community or something I can use to brainstorm ideas or help be get out of a writing hole I've dug myself into? I know some people say AI but I'd rather not with that.

Or am I just being too paranoid about sharing my ideas publicly? I've been burned with that happening before, but maybe that was a weird fluke.

I don’t think you’re being paranoid. I can’t help with communities, but perhaps another person can.

Oh they’d steal your ideas, no question. If you really need input from others, can you do it in another fandom’s subreddit and just change names?

It’s old school but I use pen and paper for brainstorming. I write clusters of stray thoughts and draw lines and sometimes even start outlining as I go along.

If you write with AI then your ideas will definitely be stolen by it since it learns with every interaction. Don't do that.

With people, it is the same as always. If you trust someone there is always the chance that they might betray you. Generally, though, I've made good experiences in shared spaces with other writers.
I would recommend more closed of spaces like discord and not reddit, like you said, where everyone can just read along online.
If you need the reassurance you can save the chats where you have talked about very important plot ideas, if someone steals them, then you have 'proof' you talked about it first and especially with the perpetrator.
But remember, people do get inspired by each other and they also often have similar ideas. It doesn't mean that you can never ever write your idea again, in the end it all comes down to the execution.
Nobody can write your story but you!

Hopefully you can find a good group of writers who like to brainstorm and respect your ideas, because they wouldn't want that done to them either.

I'd go the old fashioned way, or hell, prompt us here. I can't write anything even when I have a great idea, but I'm also paranoid enough to say I killed a few fics with being a little bit too introspective. I love digging plots out of holes, tbh.
