Have you seen old anime? The ones where half of the scenes is a freeze frame?

How old are we talking? I'm drawing a blank on anything past the 90's. Which I know I mentioned cartoons of an older age, but I was going off a documentary I watched tbh. And my own experience, as I grew up with much more cartoons than anime in my youth.

I'm talking about stuff like Captain Tsubasa, Captain Future, Captain Harlock (damn, so many captains), Hikari no Densetsu or if you want to go REALLY old, Attack No.1. Which depending on the country is what a lot of older Millenials grew up with because 70s anime were still aired a lot in the 80s and 90s.

I was deprived as hell as a kid, none of these aired when I was young. I grew up in the 90's but my Saturday's were filled with either Loony Toons, or occasionally, dubs of the more recent anime. I'll have to check those out though. I will be deprived no longer!
I really should stop listening to bad documentaries though, or at least listen to the good ones better.

Some of the anime I mentioned are definitely better done than others - Attack No. 1 is one of those cases that I had super fond memories of and then watching someo of it again as an adult - damn, the animation quality was terrible. Captain Harlock, for example, was quite a bit better. In general, 70s anime had some pretty well done gems as well. But also quite a few cheaply made ones.

As a huge Attack No. 1 fan back in the day I can confirm that 90% of the time the ball was just the same .jpeg floating in the middle of the screen in the most "animation is my passion" way possible. The animation was choppy as hell and reused a lot of the time. I love this show to bits.

I mostly loved the scenes where you get those terrible (sometimes flashing) psychedelic patterns instead of a proper background. Peak cinema. And aside from the animation, the whole show was... interesting. Those girls were brutalized and borderline abused left and right. Still loved the show but even back then when I first watched it, the way they kept getting beaten half unconscious with volleyballs by both the rival teams and their own coach was a bit much.

Saturday morning anon:

I was thinking of animes like Speed Racer and Astro Boy, plus more recent examples like Pokemon and Chi’s Sweet Home.

I’ll admit that “Saturday Morning” probably isn't the right term, but they're kind of the same, family oriented with a few animation short cuts, to the point where it’s become a style of its own being mimicked by western animators.
