I think it's probably a combo hit of young writers that just don't know "self harm" beyond cutting, and people of all ages that don't have personal experience or exposure and only think of self harm as cutting. It's kind of like how people tend to lean towards the same old anorexia stereotype of they are writing about eating disorders.
