And I'd probably agree with you on the writers front.

HOWEVER, I feel I ought to point out that the TARDIS design was a collaborative thing anyway - and kinda a weird thing to tear up over. =/ Maybe I'm just insensitive.

Also, it's been more than a month. I don't think she's coming back. If she does, we'll welcome her with open arms. There's actually barely a day that goes past when Scarf and I don't mention her. She's far from forgotten. But for now, she's AWOL, and we have to continue without her. =(

BTW, I completely agree with you about TW ships :)

=o Which ships?

I support lots. XD

But hurrah for random comments! <3

Oh sorry, that wasn't very clear for a random comment...

What I meant was, after seeing that secret I looked up your FFN profile, and what you put about your opinions on J/I, J/G, G/R and T/O are not only exactly how I feel, but expressed very succinctly. So, when I saw you'd commented, I just thought I'd mention it :P

Haha, awesome.

Not all my ships are listed there, because I haven't updated in a while, but those still apply. =D The main change is that I now also ship Jack/Owen, in a seriously fucked-up, desperate pre-S1 way. But then I'm gradually realising that I will ship Jack with pretty much anyone in either Torchwood or Doctor Who. XD

I <3 your random comment. =D

I'll ship Jack with basically anyone really, its such a fundamental part of his character and pretty fun. I never really got around to writing them, but I've always been intrigued by stuff like Jack/Yvonne and Jack/Sarah Jane. Jack, despite sometimes being violent, rough and uncaring, is quick to love and generous with his love - he is very human. So I think its excellent for him to both be attracted to Gwen and to prioritise her family and Rhys' happiness etc over their attraction. Plus, I think that the aspect of wanting someone and not having them is beautiful and poignant if somewhat painful, so in relationships like those between Jack and Gwen, Rose and the Doctor, and Tosh and Owen it is something to be appreciated rather than disregarded. I also have a soft spot for Jack with Rose and/or Martha while they both would rather be with the Doctor.

Wow, that's quite a lot of discussing het ships for me! :P

Jack/Owen, hmmm... convince me!

Hope you get into your first choice of uni btw - I remember the stress of UCAS from last year, but its definitely worth it!

Re: Sorry for making you cry, anon

When shipping Jack, it's always important, for me at least, to consider the family element. I think that family is incredibly important to Jack, which is why when the Time Agency betrayed him, he was a bit of a loose cannon until he met Rose and the Doctor, who became his new family. When the Doctor abandoned him, he created his own family at Torchwood (dysfunctional, but adorable).

I'm fond of discussing the parallels between Jack and the Doctor (I ship it so hard it's impossible to understand <333), and I think that one of the main ones is that they take those who are broken, and try to fix them. Making Earth into a better place, one person at a time. Tosh, Owen and Ianto (don't know about Suzie, because her backstory's not developed enough) are all lonely and/or desperate when Jack recruits them, have you noticed? And Gwen has potential that Jack wants to see realised - her life is lonely, not because of Rhys, but because of how mundane it is.

Owen, depending on which backstory you believe, may or may not have had several inappropriate relationships with patients before Jack recruited him. Whether or not that's true, we know him to be a bit of a rebound guy - he's very insecure and tends to use sex as a way to console himself. After losing Katie, he's extremely vulnerable.

Jack is a very touchy-feely person. Regardless of what he felt for Ianto in the end, I personally believe that Jack let it begin because he felt that Ianto needed comforting, needed to learn to feel emotion again. The last thing Jack wanted was for him to shut down.

What Ianto felt upon losing Lisa was probably similar to what Owen felt losing Katie, so I think that Jack probably would have dealt with it in a similar manner - and I think that Owen would probably have allowed him that, because he gets very destructive when he feels vulnerable (just re-watch Exit Wounds if you need proof). Owen's a really active person, but he wouldn't have been looking for another relationship. He just needed something to make him feel alive again, and Jack would know how to do that. I think also that, even by that point, Owen trusted Jack. He knew Jack could keep his mouth shut.

So I think it happened at least once, maybe a few more times, but neither of them either expected it or spoke of it, and it's all water under the bridge now.

Another thing that helped me ship this was Owen's snide comment of Ianto being a 'part-time shag'. At first, it seemed like it was just a nasty thing to say, but on re-watching, I can believe it was said partially because Owen didn't believe Jack capable of a relationship, because all that Owen had been was a part-time shag.

But those are just my thoughts, and I've prattled on for far too long. Dinner now. xD

OK, totally convinced. Entirely. Dunno why I didn't think of that myself, it makes such sense now :) Plus I always felt Owen's bisexuality didn't get enough of an exploration on the show. But Jack is very much a touchy feely person, and what you say about Owen's self destruction is very true.

Where I stand on Jack/Doctor is I ship it, but again not in a happy way - Jack adores the Doctor, I think not just because the Doctor is so amazing and inherently attracts love and adoration, though of course he is and does, but I think for Jack, the Doctor is one person, and possibly the only person, Jack feels he can completely trust and one if not the only that Jack is happy and relieved to take a back seat for. I mean, not (necessarily) in a BDSM context, but generally at least I think Jack finds in the Doctor someone he can relax and submit to somewhat, particularly in terms of making the tough decisions. Jack is a good leader but it does agonise him, and before he met the Doctor but post Time Agency he was fine to avoid responsibilty rather than shoulder it. That he started taking on that burden I think is inspired by the Doctor's example, and a way in which Jack feels he can become more someone the Doctor can like and respect; yet, in the Doctor he finds the opportunity to be involved and have exciting adventures and fun times without having to be that guy. So, I suppose to an extent I probably see Jack as relating to the Doctor in a way similar to child/parent relationships, in that he wants to show he has grown and is capable and deserves respect yet also enjoying and finding relief in the occasional chance to not have to take on the role.

But, I agree that Jack is a very touchy feely person, very free with his love both physically and emotionally, and very devoted to those he loves - he canonically has a crush and would love to take that further, not only because Jack is a very sexual being but because it is a way in which he could express his love and give comfort and generally just be closer to the Doctor. I think Jack always wants to be closer, and partiuclarly to the Doctor, who, since Jack has always been there with either Rose or Martha, Jack has never had to himself and probably sees himself as being secondary to Rose and/or Martha in the Doctor's eyes (whether or not that is the case.) And of course, Jack hopes to be able to help, to fix the Doctor, even a little bit, which links to his relationship with Ianto (and the one he so clearly had with Owen :P). It doesn't matter to him whether he doesn't know where to start, or what the Doctor needs, or even whether he can be fixed - Jack loves, and so he really wants to help.

But on the Doctor's side... The Doctor runs. He runs and runs and runs, and he likes pausing and picking up bits and pieces of where he's been, but he runs and runs and runs. He looks back sure, but I think he is pretty much terrified of the kind of intimacy that Jack offers as much as he desperately wants and needs it. He's so used to being lonely and alone, an outsider even when the rest of his species was still alive, that he withdraws even as he tentatively approaches those he lets become even a little close to himself. Jack particularly offers something he never found even amongst other Time Lords - an immortal that loves him and really would follow him to the end of the universe and back again and never ever choose to leave him. The Master choosing to leave the Doctor over life itself (kinda ;) ) was such a huge vunerability of the Doctor's. And in Jack, and the Doctor's initial repulsion at his immortal state, we can see this enjoyment of friendship and brief companionship at odds with such intimacy issues that I think mean, in canon at least, the Doctor would never fully let down those barriers, because they are such a fundamental part of his character. So while I think that the Doctor does love Jack, and might go so far as to have a sexual relationship with him, I don't think the Doctor would ever allow himself, or perhaps even be capable of, returning the kind of love Jack is offering.

Which I suppose makes the relationship between Jack and the Doctor somewhat a sad parallel of Jack and Ianto's relationship. Which of themselves are very tragic but also incredibly beautiful.

Re: Sorry for making you cry, anon

[identity profile] orrien.livejournal.com 2009-11-02 08:39 pm (UTC)(link)
I think I could just continue this conversation forever. It's like, I agree with everything that you've said, but at the same time you're saying things that I hadn't consciously thought of.

I completely and totally agree that there is an unrequited element to Doctor/Jack, because the Doctor can't bear to settle down. I don't even think that the Doc would agree to go as far as to have a sexual relationship with him, because he knows that to Jack, in this case at least (and it's a tad hypocritical, considering Jack's past), such an act would seem like a promise that Jack is something to him. And while that's true, I don't think that the Doctor could admit that to himself, and especially not to Jack. I think he's terrified because Jack is both immortal and incredibly human, and both of those things are attractive to him but in his mind contradictory.

In my head!canon, the Doctor and Jack would happen in his Thirteenth incarnation, because he'd be so terrified of his own mortality and so regretful after losing so many companions that he'd seek solace in the only companion that he can trust not to die - Jack. And I see it happening over a VERY long period of time (literally centuries) because neither of them would trust themselves with the other to begin with, and because they've both lost so many in the past that it would be difficult to start again, particularly with someone who isn't easily left behind.

At the moment, yes, I see Jack looking up to the Doctor in a sort of childlike way, because he adores the Doctor and admires him. But over time, I think that the Doctor could grow to rely on him and love Jack just as much in return. I think that the Doctor is capable of the same sort of love that Jack is offering (hasn't he shown that with all of his companions?), but he's just terrified to show it for anyone because he knows that they'll die in the end. I think he's even terrified that Jack will abandon him (which he sort of has already, if you consider the Face of Boe).
