The characters that are personifications of the concepts were made up by Gaiman, but the concepts that the characters are personifications of certainly exist in the real world. Are you saying you've met the characters, the personifications, in person?

I like the characters and all, but I don't think they're very good embodiments of the things they're supposed to be. (especially Dream. Morpheus seems so inaccurate for how I think dreams should be represented in human form.) Also, I don't think they're particularly well chosen for abstract concepts that represent constants in the world.

I was just thinking this the other day. It makes more sense than any other religion I've heard of, and the Endless are likable semi-deities.
