Write it anyway! I know I've seen the same premise somewhere, and far, far worse premises that have turned out awesome, so if it makes you happy, I say go for it, anon! I know I'd read it.

First and formost you gotta write for yourself otherwise writing is a chore. All the rules that keep you from doing what you want to do -- ignore them. Write your AU. Make it work.

I will never get RPS, but RPS AU? Srsly, WTF? What's the point, IDEK? I mean, how about just writing an original m/m story (b/c your premise is kinda cute and would probably appeal to fandom in general) instead of attempting to write two people who really exist outside of your or somebody else's screwy headspace into a story that absolutely is not theirs? OOC doesn't even come into it. I mean, if you want the faces--which is about all you'll be getting--why don't you just do Sam and Dean?

Because it's fun and we enjoy it! Why does anyone do anything else in fandom?

It's transplanting a character and personality that's already known in to an interesting premise (or porn, whatever).

So, if you don't have the length of a novel to build up a character (or if your reader doesn't) and you have perfectly good pre-existing personalities/physical descriptions to work with, you use those!

At least that's the logic from what I can make of it.

For example, you like Jared's personality (a giant shaggy goofy dog on speed) or his physical appearance (tall, built, and tall), but you don't want to read/write stories about an actor, you do an RPS AU of him as... a damsel in distress at medieval times. That's different from Sam because Sam might look the same, but he certainly does not have the same personality as the actor that plays him.

It's also why certain actors play the same roles over and over in movies too. People go in to a Hugh Grant movie, or a Vin Diesel movie, or even Seth Rogen, and they know what to expect. I'd argue most of those actors are doing real life real person au films, lol!

I totally agree with you in THEORY, anon, but in practice, I LOVE RPS AU.

I read a super awesome fic about Jensen and Misha RPing together and trolling the fuck out of fandom. I loved it! It's just silly crack, but the fandom take that was hilarious.

I read one of those years ago in Gundam Wing fandom. It wasn't even AU - it posited that within the world the characters lived in, people wrote RPF about the characters; one of them discovered that one of the others was a writer in this fandom, and started e-stalking & comment-trolling him. I don't think the fic's still online anywhere but it was one of the best, funniest crackfics I've ever seen.

(Yours wouldn't have to be AU either - they could be trolling their own RPF fandom, or one could be using it for weird emotional validation while trying to get closer to the other, or whatever. XD )
