You probably won't. I mean, the people on bad_rpers_suck? Are usually idiots. Try and stay in character, think about things before you post, and don't try and fall into cliches, and you'll be fine. RP can seem like TOTALLY SERIOUS BUSINESS YOU MUST NEVER MAKE A MISTAKE EVER, but it's also a hell of a lot of fun, too. Did you have any place specifically in mind, OP?

[identity profile] oldstarnewshine.livejournal.com 2009-11-03 01:35 am (UTC)(link)
Hey I totally haven't heard from you in like, days. WTF. :|

[identity profile] ankeelv2.livejournal.com 2009-11-03 01:41 am (UTC)(link)
college. school (OH MY GOD FORENSIC SCIENCE IS GOING TO KILL ME I JUST GIVE UP ON SCIENCE COMPLETELY EVER). silly friends shit. and I have a new bedtime.

would probably be why.

[identity profile] ankeelv2.livejournal.com 2009-11-03 10:12 pm (UTC)(link)
DDD8 I miss you tooooo.

[identity profile] astraybucanneer.livejournal.com 2009-11-02 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Same here. I've never tried it before, for all the years I've been in fandom. It's way too intimidating and there's too much drama that goes with it. I don't know if I'd have any fun at all. :/

[identity profile] gethenian.livejournal.com 2009-11-02 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Everyone makes an idiot of themselves when they're learning to interact with a new community, especially with something like RP where the unspoken rules may not be clear to a non-participant and every group seems to have their own styles and slang and things, which are usually not written down anywhere.

So try it. Making an idiot of yourself is far from the end of the world.

[identity profile] lovedforaday.livejournal.com 2009-11-02 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
I tried once, but I 1) can barely construct a coherent sentence let alone build a character and 2) you have to interact with people. I don't do well with interacting with other humans.

[livejournal.com profile] roleplaysecrets.

Go make a secret there. It will be stashed under 'help me rps kenobi' and you will have people help you.

+2 for the most amusingly-worded comments here!

And thanks!... I think.

Re: OP here

[identity profile] judo-creature.livejournal.com 2009-11-03 06:09 pm (UTC)(link)
SHIT YEAH.

You're very, very welcome, OP. ♥

[identity profile] judo-creature.livejournal.com 2009-11-02 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I've found that roleplay communities are either wonderful or terrible. I have known very few that are 'dramalicious but so worth it.' It's just a matter of finding the right place for you. I'd suggest browsing around: look at different comms and compare their rules/policies, talk to the mods before joining, read up on the players/characters there and just get a general idea of how they work and how newbie-friendly they are. My first community was very friendly to new roleplayers, and I don't think I would have gotten off as easily as I did if I hadn't joined such an encouraging community. Even though half of us played a touch OOC, nobody judged and we all interacted peacefully together.

If you're lucky, you'll be like me [and some of the others in my RP circle] and a more experienced player will take you under their wing and show you the ropes.

In terms of making yourself look like an idiot, well. That's easily avoided. Don't be the cause of wank, accept criticism, but don't let people walk all over you. Understand that you will make mistakes and that people will be douchebags, and while it's okay to be upset by these, don't let them get you down or cripple you entirely. If there's drama in a comm, the best thing to do is leave, even though it's not always that simple. If you screw up or do something OOC? Believe me, nobody will judge you. Especially if they know you're new to RPing. Be willing to work things out. Compromise is your friend. And most of all, remember that if something isn't fun for you, there is no reason you should continue doing it.

Good luck, OP! I hope you find something that makes you happy.

[identity profile] entro-pist.livejournal.com 2009-11-03 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
This.

Also, OP, try lurking at some different RP communities for a little while. Usually you can get a good idea of how the game is by reading through the main community's entries or its f-list. For instance, you might not want to jump immediately into a gigantic, fast-paced game.

Re: drama. Yes, some games will have their wank but as long as you don't involve yourself in it, you shouldn't have any problems. You can also play in non-LJ games (I've heard they're less wanky but I really don't know this for sure) or role play one on one with a partner via IM service of choice.

WELL WELL LOOK WHO IT IS. /annoying teehee

[identity profile] goodgollygopher.livejournal.com 2009-11-03 01:50 am (UTC)(link)

YES. Srsly. Don't do that right off the bat. Those things are confusing. It took me forever to even LOOK at one, let alone join it, haha. Go for the smaller, cozy ones. Those are great. 8D

[identity profile] judo-creature.livejournal.com 2009-11-03 01:53 am (UTC)(link)
I am in a game on Insane Journal [and was in another a while ago before dropping.] There was virtually no drama in either, and when there was the mods nipped it in the bud so fast it barely existed. And the comm I'm in has over one hundred characters, which on LJ would be a ticket for DRAMAWANGST.

[identity profile] generationxwing.livejournal.com 2009-11-02 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd love to RP. I've been dying for it lately.

[identity profile] ryttu3k.livejournal.com 2009-11-03 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
DO IT 8D It's so much fun! I've made some awesome friends over RPing, it stretches your creative muscles, it gives you whole new appreciation of characters. It's insanely fun!

This (http://community.livejournal.com/netherworld_rpg/49784.html) is a pretty good primer for the world of RPing - read it and it will be your best friend :)

[identity profile] sweetgreens.livejournal.com 2009-11-03 02:01 am (UTC)(link)
Don't worry! If you tell people that you're new to RPing and are open to receiving constructive criticism, you'll do fine, and you won't end up on BRPS! Most RPers, at least in my fandom, are very accepting of and patient with newbies. Everybody has to start somewhere!

[identity profile] netbug009.livejournal.com 2009-11-03 02:53 am (UTC)(link)
Anon, if you ask me, the only bad RPer (or bad writer) is the one who thinks they're the greatest, acts like a jerk, and doesn't take criticism. You don't seem like that type. Find a good RP with some people willing to help newbies out and you should be fine. :)

[identity profile] wheatcakes.livejournal.com 2009-11-03 07:14 am (UTC)(link)
Dip your feet into dressing room RP's first, since there's usually no commitment.

OP
