Particularly now that it's a closed canon, the fandom has calmed down pretty considerably. Sure parts of it are still infuriating, but in a way that's kind of ludicrously easy to avoid, particularly here on LJ where you can control which parts of it you see.

Honestly, while the controversy over the movie casting has been incredibly divisive, it's also lead to some impressive bridge building between groups that would never have talked to each other before. It's hard to get too annoyed with a "rival" shipper if you're both sitting there talking to each other about the horrible racist bullshit someone just said to you on ASN -- it kind of puts it all into perspective.

And of course, if all you want to do is read fic and meta look at art and talk to the individual people who created it? That's the best part of being in a fandom to begin with (for me, anyway) and there's no reason at all why the batshit would affect you, provided you don't have a hankering for badly-written crackfic.

TL;DR -- This is not the ATLA fandom of two years ago. The really crazy kids have barricaded themselves in a fortress of self-perpetuating insanity and leave the rest of us alone.

I've ventured into the shallows, but never too deep. Truth is, the shipping wars scared me to death. Especially when I don't ship anything in Avatar. I love this series for its humour and its plot... But I do like Zuko far more than is normal. Ahem.
