\o/ at your response to TB1 because YES. I get thinking Sam's an idiot, but "Sam is ruining Dean's life and should die" is... no. The whole die-for-each-other cycle could go on and on forever as long as they're codependent, we've seen how broken each is without the other, and although it's a little messed up, they are BETTER OFF together. Just, perhaps not so clingy-together.

I've spent the entirety of Supernatural wanting to give Sam a smack upside the head, but I love the dork.

I gotta admit I cheered over the break up because it was the signal to better things coming for those two. I was so worried at the end of S4 that they'd fall back into the same stupid dynamic so it's been really fun watching them trying to build a mature relationship with each other. I just honestly can't imagine a future (if they get one) where they aren't together. I mean even if one of them made a go at the "normal" life after the end of the show the other one would be there all the time anyways.

That got a little out of control.

The funny thing is, although Sam's the one where most of season four I wanted to throttle him and make him sit in the naughty corner and think about what he'd done, I think he's the character who overall I pretty much sympathise with the most and the character who - even if Castiel's my favourite - I probably feel a real love for the most. I just really, really, really want things to work out for him, and I don't think Sam'd ever be happy in the codependent thing he and Dean had carved out for themselves; but Sam can tear himself away easier than Dean can so I'm relieved we're seeing people finally telling Dean "Look, stop clinging to Sam, and stop being a bit of a dick a lot of the time" because okay, he's got self-esteem issues (to put it mildly) but he's not fixing them by clinging onto Sam and going LOVE AND WORSHIP ME AS YOUR BIG BROTHER AND LORD AND MASTER.

It's why I'd like to see Castiel in between them both (not... necessarily in that way, although holy crap, what a mental image *_*) so Dean's got a proper friend of sorts, someone who distinctly is not family but likes him nonetheless, and so that Sam's got someone who, when necessary, can slap Dean upside the head when Sam's not able to do the slapping himself.

And Dean's the one I've always really loved on the show. Even in season three when I started to actively cheer for him to die already (he was such an ass that season). Sam's always been the one with the best chance of tearing himself away. I think it's because he didn't put his entire happiness and sense of self worth on anyone but himself. Season 4 was really painful to watch in a lot of ways because Sam lost that sense of self worth that he's always had.

I'm so happy when Castiel gives Dean verbal smack downs. And at the same time he shows Dean that people can be angry with him and still like him. Which is an important thing for Dean to learn. I'm hoping that throughout this season we'll see the boys actively forming attachments with other people (besides Bobby). Getting to see friendships with other hunters on screen would be so nice.
