IDK, I thought Season 5 did a much better job writing-wise than previous seasons. The only thing that were lagging a bit were both the Nina and Illyria plotlines.

But Sara Fain and Liz Craft were always the weakest writers...aside from Mere Smith, who gave us Gwen and horribly contrived plots involving Egypt in Season 4. I thought Joss's or whoever's presence in S5 did give Liz and Sara a little more pop to their normally heavy-handed scripts. I think by the end he might've just been getting tired, or fatalistic because Warner Bros. announced they were going to cancel it just months before.

Unfortunately, it is true, it was never Whedon's baby, mostly Greenwalt's and Minear's (I liked him, blatant misogyny aside -- he killed Doyle and gave Wesley a bad ass throat scar, and "Are You Now Or Have You Ever Been" is the most beautiful episode in TV history, so he's basically 'win' in my book). But anyone who lauds over Greenwalt I fear is delusional. He loads his scripts with old values and hallmark expressions. It's no wonder all his other shows never make it past sweeps. Not a bad director though.

There are other great writers too. Steven DeKnight, those epic fight scenes of his. And I loved when Buffy ended and their n00bie Drew Goddard went over to Angel for S5 (he basically has the same style as Whedon, methinks, but obv from an 'outsiders' pov) And Ben Edlund found a soulmate in David Fury! Just win.

But I perhaps read too deeply into these things.

(It is also to be noted thanks to Whedon and I suspect a whole lot of weed we got Puppet!Angel >_>)
