God, is anyone here old enough to remember when people thought Suff was Big Bird's imaginary friend? I know it was supposed to be cute and comforting to children who did have imaginary friends, but I thought Snuff was some eldritch horror haunting Big Bird. He creeped me out as a kid so much!

I just found out about this! It was supposed to be a running gag where Big Bird was the only one who could see Snuffleupagus. But stranger danger panicking in the 1980s had the show runners decide to change the Snuffleupagus situation, so he was officially seen by everyone else on the street at some point.

Less “stranger danger panicking” and more that the child psychologists on the show’s staff pointed out that it might be better not to teach preschoolers that grownups will accuse them of making shit up and never believe them if they say something weird is happening to them.
