I remember when my high school worried D&D was recruiting kids to Satanism. Turns out they should have been worried about Mormonism!

I sort of remember that scare. But I think the big worry in our school was heavy metal music (maybe grunge a little bit too) and drugs, oh so many D. A. R. E. assemblies. Yeah, there were some drug problems, however, really, honestly, they should have focused more than they did on alcoholism and distracted/impaired/reckless driving.

Mormons did fairly often do their missions in our area, but I don't think they had all that much luck recruiting. While the religion itself is whoa, every Mormon I've actually gotten to know has been really nice and happy. I don't know, maybe sect matters. I've also known a Pentecostal who was really nice and a lot of stuff I learned about that particular movement gave me pause.

This might be a weird thing to remember, but I remember an issue of American Girl magazine I got as a kid had a girl write to their advice column saying she was bullied at school for being Pentecostal, because her religion didn't let her wear pants or cut her hair or wear jewelry. I thought that sounded like a nightmare and I couldn't imagine bullying any girl who had to put up with that, I'd feel extremely sorry for her.

There was a girl in my elementary school who was Jehovah's Witness and wasn't allowed to celebrate birthdays or other holidays, so she had to go to the office when we had parties for Valentine's Day or whatever.

Nobody bullied her over this and we all felt super sorry for her.

ayrt

Being Pentecostal doesn't sound great to me either (the no dancing and no short sleeves sure threw me for a loop), but bullies tend to lack empathy for their victims. It sucks how often they go after someone who already has a hard lot in life, thereby making it harder.

I'd rather be a Satanist than a Mormon.
