I feel like Frakes actually wanted to do it, idk I'll have to check my giant Star Trek costuming bible (it is a very heavy book).

It's a comfortable garment, as long as you use the right fabric. I have a real Simpliity pattern and made one for my partner, and unlike some of the fan-made patterns it's well-drafted and easy to understand.
