(Somwhat) related to Secret #2...

I know this has been a thing for a while, but the whole "[blank]-coded" thing never annoyed me until I started getting Pinterest emails with the subject line "this is so you-coded".

They're recommendation emails you receive after pinning something to your page.

Huh. I've never gotten anything like that. Interesting!

I have always hated the coded thing. First becaise I didn't get it amd it was everywhere and didn't make sense to me. Then because I got it amd I realized truly how dumb it is.

-coded is just a way to moralize matters of taste. Oh, I prefer that relationship to not be romantic - there's a bit of an age gap so now it's parent-coded and if you ship it you're a pedo (or there's no age gap and now it's sibling-coded, you only like it because you want to fuck your family you monster).

"Coded" is now a red flag.

Yes, it absolutely used to have meaning (queer-coded in Hays Code era movies, for example) but now it's used for moralistic trolling.

There are still some real cases of it that are to intentional because of censorship or creative reasons. Gay coding still happens in children's media, even with canon gay characters not being entirely out of the question. The other day there was a secret about Jasper from Steven Universe, and I don't think she's black coded, but Garnet definitely is. She's not canonically black, because she's an alien, but she was very much intentionally designed to bring to mind a black character.

How does that relate to "you-coded"? Are you suggesting anon is censored?

No, not really. Just because antis butchered "x-coded" to mean "thing I find problematic" doesn't mean the concept of coding is just that. "Coding" is an actual form of writing that stemmed from the Hayes code when it came to portraying LGBTQ+ characters. It's also common with racial and disability narratives.

I know the history. That's not what it means in fandom anymore. Context is key.

Yes, but we shouldn't let the fandom definition overwrite the original meaning. Writing off the concept of "coding" because 20 year olds on twitter misuse it is stupid.

Language changes and context matters.
