I think the massive influx of Normies in fandom during the 2020 pandemic was one of the worst things to ever happen to fandom.

I am really enjoying TLOAS, but I am fully accepting of people who dislike it, and the various problems people have with it. It scratches my brain just right, but I respect that it doesn't for other people, and I am not personally defending some of the cringy lyrics. I am open to all viewpoints.

However, at this point, I am enjoying the album in spite of Taylor Swift herself, not because of. I feel like I finally see behind the curtain at this point. The predatory marketing as well as the sheer number of variants she has released makes the record she broke feel really hollow. Seeing the cheap merch come in already broken (a hair brush that should be sold at the dollar store with the decorative backing already broken when it arrives, a sequin shirt-dress dripping sequins) is depressing. It really makes me feel like, yeah, the whole relatability thing is just an act, has only ever been an act. She's just doing whatever works best to make the most money/break the most records/be the most famous and popular. Which I'm sure is obvious to some people, but I feel kind of dumb for not seeing it until now.

But I still like the music.

Weirdly, I watched Honor Among Thieves for the first time this weekend (when there are TWO secrets for it?!). Meandered on over to Ao3 to check out the Edgin/Xenk fic (obviously) and was shocked there are less than 400 completed fics in English! I know movies usually have smaller fandom output (barring a couple) but I really expected it to have a lot more output! It has all the soup for a huge fandom. Maybe it will get a sequel (doubtful) to make it more popular.

Huh. I didn't really notice a marked increase during the pandemic. Just the continuing trend that started in the 2010s (or even before) because of social media.

What I mostly noticed was a lot of my favorite fic authors/artists/etc stopped creating during the pandemic because of well, everything. A lot of them never really came back.

But that all might be my little corner of the internet, I'm in none of the fandoms in the pic.
