As a sci-fi snob, I don't consider star wars to be truly sci-fi. I consider it a fantasy with a sci-fi coat of paint. I mean the main tropes are lifted from heroic fantasy (It basically involves a farm boy meeting a a wizard in all but name who teaches him magic, i mean the force and eventually fights an evil wizard-king. He also travels and rescues a princess) Also The Force and Jedi powers are magic in all but name, Midichlorians be damned.

This is the first time in a long time I've heard anyone say that Star Wars might be "sci fi." Is it not generally agreed upon that it's a space fantasy?

It falls under "SFF," sure, but that's because SFF = "sci-fi & fantasy" and it's fantasy

Is this not a wildly held opinion? Because I've always called it fantasy with a sci-fi lick of paint and actual fans of it have agreed with me.

it has been at least for the last 30 years that I've been an active fan. idk where OP is hanging out but this is the main thing people in general understand about SW.

(Anonymous) 2025-10-22 10:57 pm (UTC)(link)
It's a space opera.

(Anonymous) 2025-10-24 01:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes. Or space western. It's not sci-fi in the "Alien" or "Terminator" sense.

(Anonymous) 2025-10-22 10:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah. I mean it's definitely more space opera than hard SF or anything, with a lot of fantasy elements.

Jedi are fantasy, ships are sci-fi, force ghosts are fantasy, droids are sci-fi, etc. Sci-Fantasy/Space Operas are their own thing!

Well, there is a lot more types of scifi than just the tech focused. I would say SW is a mix of fantasy and scifi. But there is plenty of scifi out there that does things like explore alien cultures.

Hard scifi isn't the only scifi.

I mean, you're right about it being fantasy with a sci-fi paint job. If it's a good enough reason for a fantasy fan who doesn't normally enjoy sci-fi, like my sister, to love it, then it's a good enough reason for a sci-fi fan who doesn't normally enjoy fantasy to not enjoy it. And regardless of your feelings about how good, bad, or enjoyable it is, it's fair to categorize it based on its tropes as much or more than on its setting.

You sound like you're not just a sci-fi snob but a "hard" sci-fi snob. Which is fine, as long as you're aware that some actual sci-fi also has tech that's basically magic, and don't go into fandoms for those and complain about it. I'm tired of reviewers missing the entire point of so many books and movies because they get stuck on "BUT HOW DOES THAT TECHNOLOGY WORK???"

(Anonymous) 2025-10-23 09:07 am (UTC)(link)
They're also a sci-fi snob who is apparently so snobby that they have very little contact to other sci-fi fans because this whole "Star Wars is fantasy in space" has been around for decades, and prominently so.

I always considered it fantasy because "A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away" meant it's a historical story. Fantasy is about a magical past. That outweighs the sci-fi element of it being in a galaxy not our own.

Makes sense to me, IDK if it does to anyone else lol

Don't think this really has to be a secret 'cause like... yeah, clearly? It's science fantasy and leans a lot on myths/hero's journey/all that. Trufax. It's not snobbery to say so.
