It used to have more familiar names showing up as contestants - they were never going to get, like, A-listers or even B-listers, no, but for people who had nostalgia for actors from old TV shows or movies or soaps or stuff like that, it is/was part of the appeal. And sometimes, even if I don't know the contestant in question, I've found myself pleasantly surprised by them when they do show up. Nowadays it's more reality stars and influencers, which, eh, but at one time you were generally guaranteed to know at least half of the contestants, or have heard of them.

I started watching this show through my sister - she got hooked on it back in season 2 and our family in general got sucked in as a result. I think your secret highlights what the main appeal is, though - I can't speak to SYTYCD in general, as I've only seen the occasional clip of that show (though I have liked what I have seen), but I think people like watching somoene learning a new skill/talent. And hten shows like SYTYCD let people enjoy watching those who already have that skill and talent and can show it off and entertain the crowd that way. And the pro dancers themselves have their own fanbases that draw viwers in, and the show's had its fair share of controversies over the years (hello, Sean Spicer...) which certainly gets eyeballs as well.

Also, "Dancing" does a lot of heavy promotion, so that probably helps keep it in the public eye. I do see ads on occasion for SYTYCD, but not as many as I do for "Dancing".

haha +1 on the ads...I didn't even know SYTYCD was still on?? but I've seen tons of ads for DWTS because I watch one single hour of broadcast TV and it happens to be America's Funniest Home Videos.

I wish The Love Boat would reboot instead and give us old B and C-list actors!

I can't stand reality TV.
