Actual Wooden Furniture

(Anonymous) 2025-10-23 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
I'm looking for an actual wooden bookcase. Something that will last a long time. Anyone have recommendations for a company to look at?

No idea but I am in the same hunt but for a bed frame. It is so hard to find actual wooden furniture these days

It sounds wrong, but we have a heavy solid wood table from Ikea. It took three of us to flip it over after assembling it. If they're an option where you live, don't count them out before checking.

Yeah, I have a whole bunch of furniture pieces from IKEA that are nearly 20 years old and still in perfect shape. Their stuff is durable as hell.

My Ikea bookcase is also in very good shape, but DON'T buy a dresser from them.

Huh, which of their dressers did you get? I have a couple of their Malms and those have held up just fine.

Really! The malm was the one that fell apart on me!

That's so weird. Mine are probably 12 years old or so by now and I use them every day.

Ballard Designs and Wisteria have pretty ones, but they're not inexpensive.

I would look at secondhand ones! I would bet a lot of people are ditching books for kindles.

Try resale or antique shops.

My first choices would be Facebook Marketplace or a local woodworker. My next choice would be Sauder. With Sauder, they’re good quality except they have cardboard backings. I nail a cut piece of plywood behind it so the design on the cardboard shows from the front but the whole thing is sturdier. Three moves in six years and the bookcases still have at least another twenty years of life, probably more.

My other commercial choice would be IKEA Billy bookcases. I’ve moved them from America to Europe and back and they’re still perfect after 15 years.

My Billy bookcases are nearly old enough to drink and they're still doing fine despite being piled with WAY too many books, LOL.

Seconding Billies (Billys?). Whatever particleboard they use in those is VERY sturdy.

DA but we have one as a Whisky cabinet for me dad and we also have several decades old ones that are still holding up nicely despite being very stuffed with books. But that's the thing - they're decades old - I have no idea if current ones still hold up or if they're less durable by now to cut costs.

What country

Depends on where you are, but if you're anywhere near Amish country in the U.S., that'd be a place to start. You don't mention your budget, but if money is no object you can surely get something made to order. Otherwise, Ikea's solid wood line, or start haunting secondhand stores like Habitant for Humanity's Restore for older furniture. Assuming you don't mind it being used and very retro.

Go to ebay, and get yourself a globe wernicke modular bookcase. That company specifically - there are copcats, but they were the best for a reason. It'll be expensive, and may take time to get all the sections you want, but there is literally nothing better that will solidly hold actual books, and also last forever, remain adjustable, be transportable, and retain resale value.
