(Anonymous) 2025-10-23 04:03 am (UTC)(link)Dancing with the Stars has been, all along, hosted by whoever is also at the same time hosting America's Funniest Home Videos. First Tom Bergeron, and now Alfonso Ribero. Both are incredible people, I hesitate to say actors but they kind of are while under their own persona as hosts. Alfonso also has a massive background as a dancer, hell he used to shill "how to breakdance" videos when he was a child actor on Silver Spoons. I would absolutely believe that most of what people like about that show isn't the celebs or the dancing itself, it's the hosts.
Also they have the ABC license to do Disney theme dances, so there's that. The other show OP cites is along the lines of "[Country]'s Got Talent," where yeah the people are talented but selling themselves to a network show often ends badly. It's also very, very different. Compare it to, say, Diners Driveins & Dives versus Celebrity Chopped. One is real people, one is celebrities who don't cook pretending to compete over cooking. Real people being talented for the reason they were thrown on TV is always different from celebrities pretending for a season paycheck.
