[Simon Schama]

(Anonymous) 2009-11-10 10:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I LOL'D

... I may have missed the point. Still, Schama is freaking awesome.

Citizens influenced my political opinions more than any actual politician or book on political theory. I would too, anon, if he wasn't married.

[identity profile] une-pomme-folle.livejournal.com 2009-11-10 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Noooo, he is such a hack.

I'm studying the French Revolution at the moment, and every single one of his opinions on events go something like this (I'm sorry for spoiling it for you) 'Violence! Bloodshed! Inexcusable! High moral ground!'

His sources (when he has them) are dodgy and he ignores whole factors to prove his biased arguments.

ARGH NERD RAGE.

[identity profile] meri-contrary.livejournal.com 2009-11-11 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
I've only read his book on the Dutch Republic, and I didn't find him inexcusably bad or anything but I do think he writes popular history and not academic history. That being said, he's an engaging writer, and anything that gets people intrested in history is something I support. But I don't recommend him without caveats.

[identity profile] une-pomme-folle.livejournal.com 2009-11-11 01:47 am (UTC)(link)
I actually did a bit of research on him after posting my comment (probably should have done that beforehand!) and it's mainly his work on the French Revolution that gets the most criticism for being biased and the arguments around it being pretty much unsupportable.

I totally agree, there should be a disclaimer at the beginning of his books or something :)

[identity profile] meri-contrary.livejournal.com 2009-11-11 01:58 am (UTC)(link)
You know, that actually almost makes me want to read his books on the Revolution just to see what the hell he's saying. Although if there is a lot of "high moral grounding" I probably won't last long. It's a weakness in popular history writing that I abhor.

[identity profile] une-pomme-folle.livejournal.com 2009-11-11 06:21 am (UTC)(link)
Ugh, yes, agreed.

[identity profile] sargent-snarky.livejournal.com 2009-11-11 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
Actually... my 11th grade Brit Lit class had a running joke in which we always called him 'Sexy Simon Schama' after watching his documentary on the history of the English language. After that class and after all the joking that went on therein, I cannot take Simon Schama seriously. ^^;

I'm so sorry, but I therefore laughed incredibly hard upon seeing this.

The guy who wrote Citizens? The fuck?
Well I guess he's one of the cooler public historians out there. I once sat through a David McCullough lecture at my university and couldn't believe that they paid him like $25,000 to speak for an hour, everything he said was so fucking obvious.

(Anonymous) 2009-11-11 02:11 am (UTC)(link)
Might help if you're a bloke, as I believe he's gay.

[identity profile] shmobeline.livejournal.com 2009-11-11 05:50 am (UTC)(link)
Wow, I'm going to have to mention Schama in my history exam tomorrow. I can't escape revision for the French Rev anywhere. Maybe I should just take this as a hint that I need to get back to it. :P

[identity profile] une-pomme-folle.livejournal.com 2009-11-11 06:20 am (UTC)(link)
Ooh! I have my revs exam tomorrow as well! (Well, I guess everyone in Victoria does)

Good luck!

[identity profile] shmobeline.livejournal.com 2009-11-12 09:19 am (UTC)(link)
How'd you go? Which Revolutions did you write on?

[identity profile] une-pomme-folle.livejournal.com 2009-11-13 03:28 am (UTC)(link)
I think I did ok. I wrote on France and Russia, you?

[identity profile] shmobeline.livejournal.com 2009-11-13 06:36 am (UTC)(link)
Me too. I wrote on Russia first, and France second. It was annoying though, I knew France better for both parts. Completely blanked on the New Economic Policy.

[identity profile] une-pomme-folle.livejournal.com 2009-11-13 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I wrote on Russia second, which was great because the topic was one I'd already used for a SAC :)

[identity profile] shmobeline.livejournal.com 2009-11-14 09:56 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, that's always good. It was a good topic, I just couldn't think of any evidence to back myself up, so I went with the French topic.

[identity profile] shaggydogstail.livejournal.com 2009-11-11 11:15 am (UTC)(link)
I totally understand, OP. There's something about his voice in particular - it does</em. things to me.

[identity profile] an-utter-pirate.livejournal.com 2009-11-11 08:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Can't say I feel the same re the 'sexiness' but I do really like him and his work. ;)
