I just watched a video on YouTube about a "Boyfriend Book Box" ($550 for a box that includes a dildo based off of a male character's dick) and how it's perhaps a bit sketchy, and it reminded me of personal experiences with Loot Crate and how the shipments kept getting later and later, and I even got scammed out of one of them. (Paid for a box and it never showed up.) It's frustrating how many companies know they can take advantage of fans because people are so passionate about their fandoms.
A lot of people just see us as wallets ripe for the picking, and it makes me sad. Random loot boxes are a fun idea and I totally get the appeal, even though the quality is often questionable and I know I don't need a box of random fandom shit shipped to my house every month or so - I pick out enough of that on my own without signing up for more. But it really is so fun when it's actually good.

I understand the point of the secret, but I have to admit, I am hung up on how casually you mention this $550 box that includes a specially crafted dildo from a book boyfriend. What the flying fuck?!

noob or not I thought the same thing. like, most custom fantasy dildos are a third of that price so why is a generic penis costing that much?? assuming they mean human characters to start with, since fantasy creatures are already well handled *hurr hurr*. OP is right to call it out as a cash grab.

Honestly for Loot Crate the problem was that it was a company by geeks for geeks. They had no idea what they were doing and their meteoric growth plateaued relatively early. They should have brought in some business professionals at that point but instead they tried to fix all the little issues themselves. It’s a miracle they survived another almost five years.

I agree. If they had really kept on top of things, they could have at least maintained, if not continued to grow. A lot of people held on longer than they should have because they liked the idea so much.
