When I first get into reading fic with a given non-canon pairing I need the fic to have a plausible build-up from canon to them getting together. I need someone to do the hard work of convincing me that these two could make that leap.

This goes double for prickly bastards or hero-villain relationships or queer relationships among men who are canonically very concerned with their perception as macho straight guys.

But after I read one or two convincing versions of that character growth towards the relationship, my standards go way down and I am ready to import that good backstory into much more contrived and less thoughtful get-together scenarios.

I am repelled by unhinged female characters in fictional media. Undiagnosed personality disorders, women with dysfunctional family relationships, women who scheme and backstab other women, women who are selfish and weak and end up being bad friends, partners, parents, etc. The more realistic and well-written they are, the more I just want to turn off the show and mentally detox.

Do male characters who exhibit these behaviors bother me? Yes, but not to the sajme extent. I feel a huge sense of shame and disgust when it's a woman.

S!B This is 100% about me and my real-life trauma triggers.

When men are shitty, I'm disappointed, but not surprised. It's not a shock to my system.

(This lady isn't really a good example of the type of character I mean, it was just a convenient one. I kind of like her and her cats, tbh.)

**I** knew JKR was a twisted motherfucker when she killed one twin, but not the other. Literally why would you ever do that??? It would have been less hateful to have killed both of them, or to have killed any of the other Weasleys. Yes, even Ron or Ginny, would have been less nasty than killing off ONE of the twins. That was just sick.

For the first time in what seems like forever, I’ve found a fic series to get lost in, and eagerly await updates for! The first book was a messy, steamy soap opera, the second book brought a new canon character into the mix, and the narrative got darker, but it was still a total sexual dumpster fire in the best way. Everyone in the story is an asshole and I love it. Okay, every adult, that is.

But now we’re on Book 3 of this series. And...I’m scared. Because it’s almost 20 years since Book 1 started, and now there’s OC children of main/canon characters growing up. The oldest is 16, and...let’s just say there’s some grooming stuff involving her and an adult relative, who is canon. I want to trust that the author knows what they’re doing, in how this will ultimately play out, but where I was previously bouncing in my chair for updates, now I’m holding my breath. This OC has always been portrayed as precocious, and recent plot developments aren’t helping matters. Up to this point, while there was plenty of serious subject matter, almost all of it (save for a premature birth and NICU stuff) involved ADULTS.

I’ve been in and out of different fandoms for over 25 years. I’ve really been enjoying this one, and Book 1 of this series was the first fic in this fandom that I read. Ever. Now I’m scared I set myself up to get my heart stomped on with a golf shoe."

My two IRL besties and I still talk about Harry Potter, like a mini fandom. We won't support anything about it publicly and don't give the franchise money, but we're not above squeeing over cool merch and lamenting the fact we can't buy it.

My other IRL friends and online fandom friends have taken the stance that Harry Potter should never be discussed except to talk about all the ways it's problematic or how horrible JK Rowling is. They have said they don't trust anyone who has any fondness for HP anymore. They don't know I'm one of those. I wonder what they would do if they knew.

What makes me wonder the most is that I'm trans and none of them are.

The fic has updated quite a bit since I submitted this secret. The underage stuff....it goes to a very dark place, but it's very evident that the author isn't being exploitative or "edgy" with it. There's an actual direction the narrative is taking.

That poor OC needs a hug though.

It's most definitely fan fic. I call them "books" to keep the different parts of it separate in my head.
