When I first get into reading fic with a given non-canon pairing I need the fic to have a plausible build-up from canon to them getting together. I need someone to do the hard work of convincing me that these two could make that leap.

This goes double for prickly bastards or hero-villain relationships or queer relationships among men who are canonically very concerned with their perception as macho straight guys.

But after I read one or two convincing versions of that character growth towards the relationship, my standards go way down and I am ready to import that good backstory into much more contrived and less thoughtful get-together scenarios.

I saw this play out in the Overwatch fandom. Earlier fics had believable Tracer/Widowmaker setup. Then people got bored of how long it took to portray that every single time, and they started rushing through it to get to the established relationship they wanted to write.

I don't always need a massive build-up, but I do need things to feel in character and make sense. Doesn't matter how long I've shipped, I still will generally dislike stuff that feels OOC.

Same. Now I get where "popular fanon characterization" of characters comes from -- I've written my extremely emotionally clueless OTP having a feelings epiphany/confronting their feelings so many times at this point that the post-character-growth version of those characters is just canon to me, even though it matches nothing of what we see of the characters in canon. It's hard to go back to the constantly-bickering, regressive, stupid versions of them in canon, haha, even though those traits are some of their best traits. It's just, in my mind, they've already had character development that extends past the end of the show! They've earned their happy ever after with each other!

Saaaame. When I read the first few fics in a new fandom, everything must be in character, even for canon pairings but especially for anything outside of canon. Once that seal is broken though, I'm much more open.

I see why this is a secret, it sounds like you're self aware of it being a double standard and it coming from your personal issues. I have something a bit similar, I can enjoy mean/angry male characters while finding similar female characters very triggering and unpleasant, because of bad personal associations. I just keep that to myself and let their fans have their fun, but yeah.

I... feel this way, but with the genders reversed. I don't think it's because of trauma, and I don't know why it is. I just know when a seemingly decent male character gets toxic enough, first I'll hope he's not actually as bad as he seems, and if starts to look like he really will be, I'll nope out. (This isn't applicable to like, straight up villains or other obviously horrible guys you know right away are bad news.) Maybe it's knowing the fandom won't be able to talk about him without turning every discussion to real-life horrible man stories, and I'm not in fandom for that.

Toxic female characters are no issue. I may not like all of them as characters, but they don't make me nearly as uncomfortable.

It would have been less hateful to have killed both of them, or to have killed any of the other Weasleys. Yes, even Ron or Ginny, would have been less nasty than killing off ONE of the twins. My two IRL besties and I still talk about Harry Potter, like a mini fandom. We won't support anything about it publicly and don't give the franchise money, but we're not above squeeing over cool merch and lamenting the fact we can't buy it.

My other IRL friends and online fandom friends have taken the stance that Harry Potter should never be discussed except to talk about all the ways it's problematic or how horrible JK Rowling is. They have said they don't trust anyone who has any fondness for HP anymore. They don't know I'm one of those. I wonder what they would do if they knew.

What makes me wonder the most is that I'm trans and none of them are.

... but you wouldn't mind if someone else made them for you! As always, including the fandom and full character names is a big help, and while I'm definitely not the world's greatest expert at secret design, I'll try my best. Please note that long comment secrets can be difficult to make with a good end result. Most of the time, I'll give it a shot but might not be able to make secrets where the text is so lengthy that I can't fit it into the limited space.

I'm trying something new with the comment secret thread and extending the deadline to comment until Sunday's post goes up. I'll monitor this thread until then, and hope the extra day will be more helpful for everyone.
