IMO, it's less about being a "twisted motherfucker" and more about being a mediocre writer who did it in a clumsy attempt at pathos.

it worked the first go-around when I was invested, but upon rereads and general fandom discourse, it was a pretty obvious choice. whoever the author thinks would bring the audience a gutpunch, that's who they kill off. when you see through the curtain, there's no impact anymore.

You're not wrong... though I definitely noticed she was a mediocre and clumsy writer before that point.

So did I. I didn't mean to imply that was the first sign of her mediocrity, she was, IMO, always just "okay" as a writer. As the series progressed, the books seemed to suffer from a lack of planning and editing.

Yup. Honestly, she created a world that was interesting and had enough room for fans to explore on their own. And she had a few characters that at least in the beginning people could relate to. Those are the big reasons she got so popular. But her actual writing was meh, and it showed more and more as the series went on.
