I don't even blame the ad writers. Great genes can just mean "someone is good looking". There would be next to zero outrage if this ad was done with a pretty POC.

Eh, they're ad writers. It's their job to come up with whatever puts the company in the best light. You can have all the good intentions in the world and still get that Folger's Coffee commercial.

That's the kind of infamous advertising goof-up that hurts no-one, everyone gets a good laugh, and it boosts the company's sales once a year. We could definitely use more of those.

ppl tend to be oversensitive about stuff like this, which tbh is understandable, but at the same time sometimes they go too far with it

like its ok to point out that the line doesnt sound great. but maybe instead of blowing it up into a huge thing and going on and on and on about it, you just stop there

same with taylor swift and some of her lyrics in the new album. maybe they sound questionable but making it into a huge thing gets a little silly. unless of course you're a content creator and want all the view$$$ from ppl watching taylor swift videos

I'd argue, with Taylor Swift, the backlash is proportional to all other kinds of attention she gets... i.e., everything about her, positive, negative, or whatever, is taken to extremes, plastered over every single website from here to Timbuktu, and completely, totally inescapable.

With Sydney Sweeney, as evidenced by this thread, most people (who aren't already familiar with her work) would have no idea who she is except for the backlash over this one particular thing. The backlash is completely disproportionate to any other attention this woman has ever had before.

If the ad was done with a pretty POC, it wouldn't have brought up the model's blonde hair and blue eyes in relation to the great jeans/genes line, though.

As someone who actually witnessed this going down, what happened was that some people made tiktoks pointing out the unfortunate connotations and that it's a bit tasteless, and then the conservative outrage machine picked it up and spun it and pretended that ~liberals~ were "outraged" because they felt threatened by this big-breasted, hot, gorgeous, red-blooded real American woman (who has great big breasts, did they rhapsodies on these enough yet? No? Let these withered old men describe how hot they find the body of this young woman some more).
And then the whole thing blew up on tiktok because the content farmers on both sides picked the topic up to get their own views in.

And the actual subtext isn't that she is genetically blessed because she inherited blonde hair and blue eyes...it's that she has great tits.
