Re: Why must Kevin Spacey be avoided at all costs, but Michael Jackson is still celebrated?

I'd guess different generations. You'll actually find a lot of younger (for a given value of younger) people do avoid MJ, but the majority of his super fans are older and don't care (or don't believe) the accusations. Whereas the internet generation believe almost all allegations against Spacey and boycotting is a big thing with that crowd too.

I've also noticed a difference in musicians vs actors when it comes to stuff like this. For some reason people are really big about boycotting actors and their movies but will still listen to musicians. Not sure why that is but it's an odd trend I've noticed over time.

I've noticed this, too. Some types of celebrities just seem to generally get more devotion than other types. Musicians seem to really attract a lot of adoration, much more than actors. (Popular authors can get a lot too.) I think maybe it's because we generally listen to music more than we watch movies, so we're just exposed to music more and develop more attachment to the songs/artists? I honestly have no idea, but it really seems to be a thing.

Of course some actors get a ton of parasocial devoted fans too, don't get me wrong. But overall musicians seem to inspire more of those.

Because music is more visceral and emotional, and because of the perception that songs are written based on the musician's life, so if you feel like "this song gets me," it means the artist gets you. It's like you have this personal connection already!
