Contestants on baking competition shows with long nails gross me out

Memory unlocked of my cookery teacher leaving a flake of nail varnish in my shortbread mix after she'd shown me how to knead it. *shudder*

Hard agree.

Though I find long nails pretty gross in general. A fun thing to do for a night our or a holiday? Sure! Long nails every day all day? Gross.

It always shocks me when I see people with office jobs having them. How can you actually use your computer? I know for me that if my nails start to get even a little long it makes typing harder and uncomfortable.

(Anonymous) 2025-11-23 08:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I've thought about this too. And typing on your phone and just general every day life stuff. I guess it's under the umbrella of 'suffering for fashion' type of thing.

I don't have super long nails, but past the ends of my fingertips by little and honestly you just get used to it. Retail was the job I couldn't have my nails even slightly past my fingertips because they would catch on anything I did, being back in an office job I can grow them out again because I'm not constantly using my hands to open boxes, clean shelves, put stock out that all nicks away at them bit by bit.

Same. I find long nails outside some party extremely gross. Also clack clack of nails on keyboard or phone drives me insane

I have to agree. 🫣 I'm sorry, and I agree they're pretty, I love the look of long nails, but the thought of it grosses me out. I keep my own nails very short because it's just SO much easier to keep it clean under there. I have a "thing" about my hands not feeling dirty, and that includes needing my nails to be short so they don't feel dirty either.

(Anonymous) 2025-11-23 08:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes. And also people cooking/baking wearing rings or a watch!

[personal profile] hey_hey_hey 2025-11-23 08:55 pm (UTC)(link)
They always have their long hair hanging over the food and their beards uncovered and long nails is what grosses you out?

(Anonymous) 2025-11-23 09:00 pm (UTC)(link)
OP didn't say those other things didn't make the list!

(Anonymous) 2025-11-24 04:48 am (UTC)(link)
Not OP but YES, because hands go DIRECTLY into what's being made and SO much crud can accumulate under the nails.

Not saying those other things aren't ALSO gross but I am VERY capable of being grossed out by multiple things, personally.

(Anonymous) 2025-11-23 09:10 pm (UTC)(link)
So much dirt and grime collect in normal nails, I can only imagine it's multiplied the longer the nail is.

+1

I work in food service, I always have to take time cleaning under my (short) nails and not let them get too long. I can't imagine working with very long nails! Plus I think it would just make the job trickier though I guess people who always have their nails long get used to it.

(Anonymous) 2025-11-23 10:44 pm (UTC)(link)
how do people wipe their asses with those things?

(Anonymous) 2025-11-24 06:02 am (UTC)(link)
Bidets. Or fake nails.

Yup. Long nails, big beards, long hair that's draggling everywhere, and the worst? SWEATING. Forehead/face sweat that is dripping...so gross.

Yeah, some people do neat artistic things with their nails but long nails in general gross me out. Long nails in food service, medical positions, or anything else that requires you be at least moderately sanitary? Hell the fuck no.

(Anonymous) 2025-11-24 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
I love long nails and nail art, but I agree here.

Handling food needs constant hand usage and constant cleaning. Can't do that with long nails.

Like, there's a time and place for long nails lol

I also agree with some of the upthread comments about tv cooking having some other hygienic issues. Long hair and facial hair not tied up or covered up. All that sweating. And quite often on Chopped, people cutting themselves and getting blood on the food. 💀

(Anonymous) 2025-11-24 03:15 am (UTC)(link)
IMO, they're kind of gross for any cooking, and a biohazard if you're handling raw meat, eggs, etc.

Agreed! also how do they function for every day life stuff like typing and using the bathroom?

I have short nails because I go to a wall climbing gym and nails will bend back painfully if you have them.

(Anonymous) 2025-11-24 04:29 am (UTC)(link)
I don't even do anything physical like wall climbing, I just haaaaaate it when you're trying to do something like open a package and your nail bends back painfully. Ugh, just typing that gives me the heebie jeebes. I keep my nails short.

This secret reminds me of a YouTuber I was watching (Mike Chen) who went to an outdoor BBQ in America somewhere. Nobody was wearing plastic gloves, nobody was wearing hairnets, one of the servers had long fake nails. I couldn't watch it anymore from there.

(Anonymous) 2025-11-24 08:40 pm (UTC)(link)
"outdoor BBQ in America" give cookout vibes, in which case I would never expect anyone to be wearing food safety stuff. But if it's an official company or something, yeah no.
