Nothing makes me more sure that any indie project will fail than when they come to broad genre forums and fan discords wanting to "communally source ideas" because they don't have any strong plans or visions of their own.

This goes for novels, games, webcomics, fanworks, fan events, etc etc.

If you have to ask "what should I do at all?" and not "what do you think of this idea I already have?" it's inevitably going to be bad.

I heard D&D 5th Edition's "longest-ever playtest" was like this.

I dunno, one of my favourite bands of all time was apparently conceived like this.

Allegedly, Manuel Gagneux of Zeal & Ardor asked Reddit or 4Chan or somewhere for 2 genres to mash up. Someone said Death Metal and Slave Music, and so he came up with an alternate past of the slaves finding Satan instead of Jesus and it's fucking awesome.

Yeaaaahhh.....it's not like a 100% guarantee that it's going to suck or fail, but it's a strong indicator.....
