Tony Stark/Dr. House/Sherlock's Sherlock - at some point the "Super Smart Asshole Who's Always Right" stopped being fun and started filling me with hate. Can't even reread some of the fics I used to love.

But usually if I dislike a character so much I just don't like the thing and thus don't even think about it.

That is also a character trope I hate. They don't always ruin a thing for me. But jerks and anti-heroes are usually not among my favorite characters. I did like House, though, at least the first few seasons. For some reason he's the only one of that character type that has worked for me.

I don't even mind anti-heroes! It's just the meanness with no comeuppance. The complete lack of growth. That the character should *clearly* have an arc of being less of a douche but never does!

I'd take 10 Punisher stories over one with Tony Stark because everyone* knows that the Punisher is messed up and also he'll never defeat the concept of organized crime and also he can be pleasant enough to other characters.

*Except "those" people, sadly.

MCU Tony, real 616 Tony has had plenty of introspection and isn't always unlikable.

But also! Different strokes for different folks. Viewing this characters as a kind of wish fulfillment is cool. I guess I just relate more to the person getting dunked on.

Agreed about MCU Tony. I liked him okay in his movies because he did have somewhat of an arc there. But then he'd go to the multi-character movies and lose the growth and somehow be treated like he could do no wrong and was better than everyone else. Everyone hero worshiped him to a weird degree. I get that he was the first MCU main character, but in-universe it makes no sense.

I get you. I don't mind it so much if this type of character is a small part, or if they have significant growth. But the ones where they just rock on without ever changing, I strongly dislike. Also a lot of people tend to latch onto these as their favorite characters and obsess over them, which just makes me dislike them even more.
